What are dental restorations

When a tooth has been lost, it can’t perform it’s function anymore or is simply not looking aesthetically pleasing, a dental restoration treatment can be performed on it.  In the most severe cases where the tooth has been or is to be removed, dental implants is the way to go. If the tooth root is firmly set in place then in order to restore it’s function or pleasant look, dental crowns or porcelain veneers can be placed.

In what situations are dental crowns the best option

A dental crown is used in dental restorations when the structure of the tooth is damaged: the tooth is broken, a large cavity weakened it’s structure or it’s presenting a serious cosmetic fault that cannot be fixed with veneers. Crowns are very strong and durable, but they require to file the tooth. They are used in restorations of teeth that are exposed to heavy biting and chewing.

When are porcelain veneers the best option

Placing Veneers require significantly less work on the tooth and can produce color or minor shape change. Veneers have a strong structure, but since they are around 1mm thin, they are brittle and may shatter under strong biting forces. This is the main reason why veneers are mostly used in cosmetic restorations of front teeth.

Differences between dental crowns and porcelain veneers

Although both treatments can be used with similar results in some cases, the choice must be taken for the individual tooth based on it’s purpose and condition. Both the veneers and the dental crowns are individually built by the dental technician from the teeth footprint taken from you by the dentist.

Porcelain veneers are about 1mm thin pieces of porcelain that best simulate the natural look and feel of tooth enamel. The tooth is filed very little in order to receive the veneer.

Dental crowns on the other hand are total replacements of a tooth crown. There are many types of dental crowns and they have a much stronger structure, especially the porcelain fused to metal or zirconium type. Before being fitted with a dental crown, the tooth’s former crown is reduced to a small post.

Porcelain Veneers or Dental Crowns lifetime

Having a dental restoration, either veneers or dental crowns, is a lifelong decision and there is no reversibility on that, so choose taking into account all possibilities. The lifespan of the restorations will depend much on your oral hygiene. Biting hard objects as cherry pits will easily chip a veneer or a crown. When taken good care of, veneers and dental crowns can last up to a lifetime. However, their average lifetime if around 10 years.

Prices

In UK and USA, porcelain veneers may cost between 650 to 2000 $ per tooth. The price depends on individual case and needs. Dental crowns come in these countries at 750 to 2100 $ per tooth.

Prices vary much depending on the geographic location. In India there are the cheapest crowns and veneers, costing around 150-200 $ per tooth. In Eastern Europe or Turkey you can also find quality dental restorations at bargain prices for veneers and crowns starting from 180-250 $ per tooth.

My dentist recommended me dental crowns, but she hadn't time to explain the difference between dental veneers and crowns. Dental work is really cheap in Eastern Europe..
